Best Organic Cotton Socks in the UK: What to Look For

Socks are one of the easiest places to start swapping to more sustainable clothing. They are cheap, you wear them daily, and the fibre makes a real difference to comfort. Here is what I look for when choosing organic cotton socks in the UK, and where to start browsing.

Why choose organic cotton socks?

Conventional cotton is a thirsty, pesticide-heavy crop. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, which is better for soil, water and the farmers involved. It is also soft, breathable and gentle on sensitive skin.

What to check before you buy

  • Certification: look for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) on the label or listing. “Made with organic cotton” alone can mean a small percentage.
  • Fibre blend: pure cotton socks wear out quickly at the heel. A little elastane or nylon (around 5–15%) helps them keep their shape and last longer.
  • Fit and cushioning: choose a cushioned sole for walking and trainers, and a lighter knit for work shoes.
  • Price per wear: a slightly dearer pair that lasts two years beats cheap pairs that develop holes in two months.

Where to browse

Amazon UK has plenty of options at different prices. These searches are a good starting point:

Always read the product description and reviews and check for the GOTS mark, as listings vary and I cannot vouch for every seller.

Making them last

Wash at 30–40°C, turn them inside out, skip the tumble dryer where you can, and darn small holes early. Care matters as much as the fibre when it comes to sustainability.
