A T-shirt is probably the most-worn item in your wardrobe, which makes it one of the easiest places to make a more sustainable choice. Organic cotton is a popular option, but not every “eco” label means what it says. Here is what to look for before you buy.

Why Choose Organic Cotton?

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, which is better for soil, water and the people who farm it. You can read more in my post on how organic cotton is changing the fashion industry.

What to Check Before You Buy

  • The percentage. Look for 100% organic cotton, or the exact blend stated clearly.
  • Certification. Labels such as GOTS or OCS help confirm the organic claim. My guide to sustainable fabric labels explains what they mean.
  • Fabric weight and feel. A slightly heavier cotton usually holds its shape and lasts longer.
  • Reviews. Check comments on fit, shrinkage and how the shirt looks after washing.

Everyday Options Worth a Look

Please check each listing for the current price, sizing and fibre content before buying.

Make It Last

The greenest T-shirt is the one you keep. Wash on a cool cycle, avoid the tumble dryer where you can, and repair small damage rather than replacing the shirt.
