Plain t-shirts, sweatshirts and underwear are the clothes you wear most, which makes them the best place to start if you want a more sustainable wardrobe. This guide lists five UK-friendly brands that independent reviewer Moral Fibres recommends for organic cotton, plus how to check any label yourself. If you are still deciding whether organic is worth it, read organic cotton vs regular cotton first.
What to look for before you buy
- GOTS certification. The Global Organic Textile Standard covers the organic fibre and the processing. Our guide to fashion certifications explains what it does and does not promise.
- Fairtrade cotton if you also care about farmer pay.
- Fabric weight and stitching. A heavier, well-sewn tee usually lasts longer, which lowers your cost per wear.
- Repair or take-back schemes. These help clothes stay in use.
5 organic cotton brands to look at
The details below come from the Moral Fibres brand roundup. Prices and ranges change, so check each brand’s own site before buying.
1. Yes Friends
A British brand based in Bristol, making t-shirts, jeans, underwear and hats from GOTS-certified organic and Fairtrade cotton. Its clothing is made in India. Moral Fibres rates it as the most affordable of the five (under £50), in men’s sizes XXS to XXL and women’s UK 8 to 20.
2. Plain & Simple
GOTS-certified t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and joggers. The brand says they are plastic-free from fabric to labels, and offers free take-back for recycling or composting. Sizes run from women’s UK 4 to 18 and men’s XXS to XXL.
3. Rapanui
Based on the Isle of Wight, with GOTS-certified products and a UK factory that, according to the review, runs on renewable energy. It also takes back worn-out items for recycling. Good for t-shirts, shorts and knitwear.
4. Komodo
GOTS and Soil Association certified clothing in organic and natural fibres, with mostly vegan and all cruelty-free products. It sits in the middle price band (roughly £50 to £100 per item, per the review) and is sold through Ethical Superstore.
5. Beaumont Organic
Women’s fashion in GOTS-certified organic cotton, plus linen, lyocell and Tencel, made in Europe. It offers free repairs for UK customers and a circular resale scheme, which is useful if you want pieces to last for years.

Shopping on Amazon UK
If you prefer Amazon, search organic cotton t-shirts with GOTS labelling and check the product listing for the actual GOTS certificate or licence number before you buy. A product can say “organic” without being certified.
